Resilience & emergency Management (REM)
Extreme weather events like Winter Storm Uri, flooding, heat waves, power outages, and exposure to pollution are just a number of the emergencies that have disproportionately burdened East Austin’s historically disadvantaged communities. Community members have shared stories with us of trauma and loss; loved ones who relied on life support but lost power, freezing or sweltering temperatures, days without running water, being unable to use their AC or cook for themselves or their family, etc. In acknowledgement of harsh realities that we will continue to face during the ongoing climate crisis, PODER recognizes the urgent need to educate, equip, and empower our communities with the tools and information necessary.
PODER’s REM program is largely characterized by pop-ups and workshops that meet communities right where they are: PTA meetings, Senior Activity Centers, youth programs, mobile home communities, etc.
For more information about hosting workshops in your community, reach out to us at mariansan.poder@gmail.com or pinoncar@gmail.com.
Many thanks to our partners at the City of Austin and GAVA for their work towards creating a more resilient Austin.
