PODER’s Colorado River Conservancy
The Colorado River east of Longhorn Dam is recognized by the State of Texas as one of the most pristine waters in Texas. To address the impacts of impending development along this section of the river, PODER established the Colorado River Conservancy (CRC) in 2020. Through community education, engagement, and advocacy, the CRC is committed to its mission of preserving, protecting, and restoring the environment for all residents and members of the river’s natural habitat.

Like many cities in the United States, Austin has a history of segregation, redlining and environmental racism that remains today. This history is reflected by the lack of environmental protections for the section of the Colorado River in East Austin. As such, the Colorado River Conservancy (CRC) was organized by PODER, a grassroots, community-based organization that has fought for the river through its decades of work combatting hazardous, industrial land uses directly in the vicinity of working-class neighborhoods of color.

The Colorado River Conservancy is committed to bringing together the broadest possible coalition of community, environmental and corporate stakeholders. Our immediate tasks include: water quality testing, community outreach and organization, engagement with ongoing development interests to promote riverfront planning preservation, access and restoration, and finally collaboration with local government and public institutions to advocate for implementation of the Colorado River Corridor Plan, already adopted by Travis County and the City of Austin. Leveraging strategic planning and leadership, the CRC aims to provide community-led guidance that encourages compatible redevelopment while maintaining this precious asset for future generations.

The CRC collaborates with fellow environmental stewards and organizations, community activists and local neighborhood groups to educate and advocate for the protection and preservation of the Lower Colorado River between Longhorn Dam and the Travis County line. The CRC partners with city and county representatives, corporate stakeholders and institutions on parkland acquisition, restoration, and community engagement.
